Sunshine Ceramic Studios was founded by Marie Chutjian, in February, 2023. As an artist and aspiring potter she was inspired to bring the arts even more to life in Milford. The mission of the studio is to build and grow a community of artists who share a common goal of enhancing their lives and the lives of others through creative expression, the sharing of ideas, and art for art's sake.
As an artist and aspiring potter I was inspired to bring the arts even more to life in the town we all love and many of us call home, Milford. I dabble with many mediums, from drawing, painting, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, photography, cooking, baking, writing, basically all things creative; however, I have found my greatest passion in clay. Pottery truly centers me, and fans the flames of creativity within. After taking courses at Wesleyan Potters, Milford’s own Adult Ed Program, and two semesters of ceramics at Southern Connecticut State University as a part of my minor in Studio Art, I was eager to find a way to make pottery a part of my daily life.
Humor and joy are important factors in my work. It is easy to forget or dismiss the importance of happiness in our lives. Personifying animals in my work not only adds an element of humor, but it makes them relatable and sparks conversation. For example, my sculptural work explores feelings of anxiety and despair but because of the exaggerated expressions, I hope the audience can laugh at their expense.
For my functional work, I want the experience to be explorative and full of wonder. To lead the user, every surface is considered when developing a concept. The punch line to a joke or a morning meditation may be inscribed on the bottom of a mug, or an especially precious detail may be carved into the handle. Each piece often includes layers of sculpted and painted details using techniques such as sgraffito and mishima. Fantasy and whimsy provide a wealth of inspiration for my pottery.
Kaylon Pike is a home studio potter in Farmington CT. Her journey into ceramics began as a personal exploration, and over the past five years, she has developed a strong passion for pottery and the limitless creative possibilities it offers. Her work primarily incorporates surface design and carving techniques, however she continues to experiment with new approaches and materials, finding inspiration in the versatility and unpredictability of the medium.
