Activity: Handbuilding dish with floral impressions

“Handle & Hold”

Handle and Hold is a national cup exhibition juried by ceramic artists Erika Novak and Stephanie Haines, celebrating the beauty, function, and individuality of the humble cup. Featuring work from artists across the country, the exhibition highlights a wide range of approaches to form, surface, and craftsmanship in one of ceramics’ most intimate objects.

Handle and Hold will be on view in the Fisher Gallery throughout the weekend during the CT Clay Crawl, offering visitors a chance to experience this diverse and thoughtfully curated collection up close.

2-4pm: "Building Community Through the Fire" Opening Reception

Works by students, instructors, and members of FVAC Clay Studio on view in the Drezner Gallery.

12–2 PM: Noborigama Unloading

Join local potters as we unload work from the Noborigama wood and salt/soda kiln. These firings create one-of-a-kind pieces shaped by ash, flame, and vapor. Wood kiln unloadings are truly Christmas morning for potters — it’s the first glimpse of results, and you never quite know what magic will emerge. Expect spectacular color, dramatic surfaces, and work by several artists, including some of our Clay Crawl participants.

Alternative Firing

Smoke, Obvara, Fuming, Saggar, and Raku.

In addition to having work for sale, Vicente Garcia and Mike Tino will be firing new work at the studio all weekend long! If you are curios about alternative firing techniques, this is a stop you won’t want to miss. Stop by for a behind the scenes glimpse into how these potters create the stunning surfaces that make their work so distinctive.

11 AM: Silkscreen Printing on Clay Demonstration

Join ceramic artist Avis Cherichetti in her studio for a live demonstration of silkscreening on clay on Saturday May 2nd at 11am during the CT Clay Crawl. This surface decoration technique allows artists to transfer detailed imagery and patterns onto clay, opening up exciting possibilities for graphic and layered designs. Visitors will get a behind-the-scenes look at the process and see how silkscreening can be used to create dynamic ceramic surfaces.

Trevor Youngberg Studio | New England Woodfiring Conference

255 Ansonia Rd, Woodbridge, CT 06525

12–4 PM: Rocket Kiln Firing

Artists from the New England Woodfire Conference, Matt and Katrina, will load and fire a Rocket Kiln. The Rocket Kiln unlocks new potential in the woodfiring process as it is smokeless, uses minimal wood, and can reach 2,350F in three hours. Learn more about this new kiln design and the results that can be achieved within!

Bliss Pottery House

  • 10-12pm: Kathryn will be throwing platters, mugs and vases on the wheel.

  • 1-4pm: Amanda will be hand building mugs and plates.

Free Interactive Stations

  • Kids’ Painting: A fun, hands-on acrylic painting station for young artists.

  • Community Installation: Decorate a ceramic dragonfly to be featured in the Bliss studio collection.

See the results of another unique firing method featuring rich, colorful glazes rarely seen in a school setting. You’ll find examples of work made by CCW pottery students alongside pieces from a few local potters.
